Recruiting for new CSSC members!

Here, we focus on the Computer Science and Scripting Club, which was launched during this academic year.  The club, advised by Professor Sonya Cates, already has over 40 student members! They meet most weeks during the academic year; they divide their time between technical activities aimed at furthering their computational skills and social activities designed to develop rapport and community among the members.

鈥淭he transition to higher education can be a rough one. It comes at a pivotal point in many people's lives, as they begin to live on their own for the first time. Their support networks, established for the first 18 years of their lives, are further away than ever before.  We wanted to help make that a little easier.  The Computer Science & Scripting Club was founded by a small group of friends looking to provide a space to make friends with peers and discuss their interests.  Club meetings were almost exclusively at the request of members. While this did include meetings that had some form of Computer Science as a focus, this also included meetings for games, help with studies, or just providing a general space to hang out with others.  Contrary to our name, anyone and everyone are welcome.  On several occasions, the number of people from other majors dwarfed the Computer Science majors.  We hope to continue providing that space for years to come!鈥 said Riley King (club president) on behalf of founders and executive board members Ryan Deyo, Emma Bolduc, Aidan Connaughton, and Mike Giles.

Club advisor Professor Cates added, 鈥淚 appreciate that the club gives students the opportunity to make connections across class years.  Course sequences and prerequisites are important in computer science, but they can limit those kinds of interactions in the classroom.鈥  Keep up the great work, CSSC!
