Those of you who graduated in 2019 or earlier and have been back to campus likely noticed the new (opened in January 2020) Richard Bready Applied Learning Laboratories (or SECCM Labs Building -SELB).  One of the gems of campus, SELB houses teaching and research facilities for all SECCM programs.  Many thanks to the generous donors who supported the design and construction of the SELB.

In case you have been unable to visit in person, we would like to give you some insight into some specific aspects of the building.  Here, we focus on the space used primarily for senior design work for the Engineering program.  The Engineering Design Space (also known as SELB 100) includes workbenches, storage lockers, and fully equipped toolboxes for each senior design team.  It includes a collaborative work/meeting space and access to CNCs, mills, larger saws, and welding infrastructure for fabrication use.  An associated Innovation Laboratory, located on the second floor, provides access to 3D printers, laser cutters, and other equipment necessary for creating prototypes in senior design and other Engineering coursework.

Said lead Design instructor Dr. Janet Baldwin, “The design space has transformed the student experience, allowing students to develop both intellectual acumen and hands-on skills in the engineering design process.  The space lends itself to collaboration within each individual groups but also allows students to provide feedback on each other’s work.â€

This space has vastly improved how our students are able to prototype their design projects – and thus has had a huge impact on the student experience.  Next time you are on campus, please stop by and check it out!
